All three Island communities remain focused on meeting the challenges of increased vehicular traffic and congestion on the island. Projects identified in the AIPC-sponsored 2011 Island Transportation Study continue to be implemented, and the three municipalities are working to refine their priorities for future efforts. Based on AIPC’s past engagement in transportation infrastructure, AIPC board members are currently serving in leadership roles on the Pell Bridge Realignment project and the City of Newport’s Transportation Master Plan teams. Road work is already underway in Newport and Middletown, and in Portsmouth new road designs (including a roundabout for East Main Road in the Clements Market area) are in the design planning phase. While these road projects are necessary to handle increased private vehicle traffic congestion, AIPC will remain focused on improving public transit options island wide, especially during the peak tourist season.
